Renewable energy

Your home

There are many ways you can lower your energy use at home, reducing your bills and your impact on the environment. These could include changes to your lighting and appliances, installing solar panels or even buying an electric car.

Around 40% of energy in our region is used in the home. You could make a real difference in the fight against climate change and reduce your energy bills by being more energy efficient or by installing low carbon technologies such as solar panels.

Here are some simple steps you can take to help you start your net zero journey.

Draught excluders

Fitting draught excluders in your home could save you £20 a year.

Change your light bulbs

Using energy saving light bulbs could save you around £35 a year. Turning your lights off when you're not using them will also save you around £14.

Wash at 30°C

Doing a full load of washing at 30°C could save you £6 a year. Save another £30 by line drying instead of using a tumble dryer.

Turn it off

You can save around £30 a year just by turning your appliances off standby mode. Most appliances can be turned off at the plug without upsetting their programming.

Less time in the shower

You can save £7 a year on your energy bill just by spending one minute less in the shower each day. Fit a water meter and you could save another £12.

Kettle

Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need and save £6 a year.

Washing up

Use a bowl to wash up rather than a running tap and save £25 a year in energy bills.

Turn it down

Turning your heating down by just 1°C can save you as much as £75 per year.

Smart meter

Switch to a smart meter to keep track of your energy spending.
