Community Centre Energy Reduction Action

Community Centre Energy Reduction Action

This project will complete a 12-year refurbishment of a Cumbrian community centre with the purchase of a new smart LED lighting system.

Organisation behind the project

Dalton Community Centre is run by Dalton Community Association, a team of around 50 volunteers, and hosts everything from mother and baby groups to a luncheon club for the retired, as well as being home to a library and the local police office. It is used by 50 different groups every year, with up to 5,000 people coming through the doors every month.

Background and detailed description of the project

Our £6,060 grant will help complete the 12-year refurbishment of Dalton Community Centre, enabling it to buy a new smart LED lighting system, which is expected to cut the centre’s lighting bill by around 20%.

The new lighting completes a £750,000 restoration of the centre, which has been completely redeveloped since 2008 to make it fit for a wide range of community uses. The centre is now more energy efficient, with a new heating system, insulation, double glazing and solar panels.

Volunteers now plan to create a series of short films about the transformation of the centre to share their journey with the wider community, which will include tips on energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

Three one-minute documentaries will be shared online and shown at the centre’s regular film club, and will be supplemented by information leaflets to help promote energy efficiency among the local community.

Project partners

To deliver the Community Centre Energy Reduction Action project, Dalton Community Association will be working with a number of partners including:

  • Signal Films – a local community film and video maker
  • Foresters – a local electrician.
